Chromatic Canyons
Photographic Narrative of the Antelope Canyons
CHALLENGE
The assignment required us to select a natural phenomenon from a list provided by the professor. I chose canyons. From there, we were asked to narrow our focus and create a narrative-driven deliverable. I decided to develop an informative photography book.
APPROACH
To make the concept more specific, I focused on the Navajo Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon located on Navajo land in Arizona. My book explores the canyon’s striking range of colors, explaining why those colors appear and how lighting influences the way we perceive them. The rich, chromatic qualities of the canyon made it a compelling subject, offering a wide range of powerful photographic opportunities. Visually, I wanted the photographs to take center stage, supported by typography that is clean, bold, and confident without overpowering the imagery. To create a more distinctive and immersive layout, I edited some of the images by removing the background around the canyon edges so the forms appear to lift off the page, adding dimension.
